Most beds do well with 2–3 inches of mulch. Use 3 inches for weed suppression, 2 inches around annuals and shallow-rooted plants, and keep mulch a couple of inches away from trunks and stems.
The math: 300 sq ft × depth in feet ÷ 27 = cubic yards. One cubic yard of mulch covers 162 sq ft at 2" · 108 sq ft at 3" · 81 sq ft at 4".
Bulk mulch by the cubic yard is usually much cheaper than bags once you need more than about 1 yard (13–14 bags).
